We've got a full day in Arras today, and Drew decided to have a day off the bike, and there's only two things I wanted to see that are both within the town, so they were easy anyway....
The Arras Memorial was much bigger than I was expecting... it was also a cemetery for the commonwealth war graves again...
There were a few wreaths around too... this one touched me as I thought the message was very nicely written...
... and just to prove that all people of the British Empire were involved in the war, I found some indian graves and a British Jew also...!
...and there were some german graves here also, but not in the usual iron cross style.... does anyone know why they are here....??
... and this one caught my eye as it was obviously not known whether the body was who it was meant to be...
I also found this grave... it had a standard headstone as well as an old cross behind it... it turned out to be a Major, and the cross seemed to be from his men...
This one caught my eye too... the poppy is written on and says "To Percy, with Love and Pride, the Ashmans"
I also hunted down the name of the first black officer in the british army, who is commemorated here... Walter Daniel John Tull...
.. There was also an execution area..!
.. after getting back to town and a bit of lunch, I went for a walk round, so these are a few photos of the town... including what looked like bullet scars on the cathedral walls...!!
