Both of us woke up this morning having had a reasonable sleep but feeling sleepy still... and with 39kms to go today, the weather was HOT-HOT-HOT even at 8am this morning....!.... and this is the hottest it's been the whole holiday.... almost no wind and no clouds meant that we were stopping regularly for breaks in the shade and water... and most of the riding today was on roads completely in the open.... no shade or anything...!... here's one of the stops...
... and we found this at another of the stops.... the inscription is "Mere de Misericourde"... My translation skills aren't great, but does it mean 'mother of misery'...???... somebody tell me, please...!!
... and on the way towards Guines (where we're staying tonight) we passed a memorial to the 'fields of the cloth of gold', which I'd heard of but didn't know the history...
... and just as we came up to that memorial, we had our first proper mechanical failure of the trip.... Drews crank gears wouldn't shift.... he was stuck in the middle cog, which was not so bad, but we had a look and couldn't immediately see anything wrong, so we decided to carry on to the hotel as it was opnly about 5kms away and see if we could find a bike shop then....
Luckily, Guines does have a bike shop, and after explaining the problem to the guy behind the counter (yes, my french is getting better!), he took a look at it and pulled out a massive rock that had got stuck and jammed the shifter.... here's a picture of the rock... I could only just fit it into the photo, so apologies if the photo is not absolutely clear....
... and here's me pointing at the massive rock, so that you can get a sense of scale....
... and lastly, there's a beautiful picture of my bike... the steed that hasn't missed a beat in the while trip.... my tool bag is still well and truly wrapped up...!
