Had a great night sleep at Martins place (Jon's dad), followed by some homemade, hand rolled oat porridge..
That was fantastic, and set the scene for a great 75% of the journey today... The hills were fine, the scenery beautiful, and the company great..! Best of the lot was the top of caradon hill... Exotic, bleak, and a fantastic view, as well. A good feeling to know that we've made it to 1064 feet above sea level..!
The weather was raining during breakfast, so concerns were rising, but it turned out that the weather was Just ok in the morning, and brightening up in the afternoon... Here's us sheltering under a tree to escape a shower...
Then we hit the hard stuff...!.. The hills were constant and deadly, and along with a small GPS error that took us 1/2 mile out of the way.... Up a Hill!, we were feeling the distance today... So going from the top of caradon hill to the river Tamar level as ok, but not too much fun when you think about the hill coming out of the Valley... The good news is that we entered Devon there...
The guy who took this photo was a walker heading in the opposite direction, so we had a chat and it turned out that he'd walked from Bradford (!), zig-zagging a bit, and had covered over 600 miles... oh... and with no money... just scavenging and camping at night...!
and then he lied to us...!.. we asked about the hill heading out of the tamar valley.. the one he had just walked down.. and he said it was short and not too steep. It wasn't either of those!
But finally we got to Tavistock, and found a town nicely nestled in a deep valley...!... What is wrong with these people..??... Why don't they locate the towns at the locations convenient for cyclists...?
We're off to Exeter tomorrow, going around the north of dartmoor, but it's a slightly shorter day, so hopefully Devon will be a bit nicer to us....?
