So we made it to Cornwall OK on the night before we started ... Kevin looked after us fantastically.. We had a beer in our hand within seconds of arriving at his house... It was the jubilee after all..!... So we toasted the queen a few times (Three to be exact)
Woken with a cup of tea and a few bacon sandwiches, and we're feeling quite good for our journey to the start line at Lands End... But it was raining, so we're a little apprehensive at the thought of it raining on us the whole day, which it was meant to do. Hmmm. It was definitely raining, and raining and blowing hard...! I'm not sure if you can see from the attached photo, but we were very cold and wet.
this is almost everyone who came down to see us off... it really does look like we're cold and wet, doesn't it...!
Jon is on the left, who made the worst decision of his life in not joining us for the journey... ohhhh he's going to regret it...! (let me tell you more about our journey, Jon...)
the bikes were ready. though it would be only a few days before they morphed into the versions that were to finish the trip..!
I didn't have many hopes for Andrew's back-up bike as I think the frame maker had got his inches and centimetres mixed up....!
All lined up at the start line, ready for the off...!
I think one of the kids started off this 'arms in the air' pose
There is video of us leaving the starting line too, but I'll have to link that later.
The kids and everyone joined us for the first few hundred metres which was lovely, and very poignant..
It was still raining 10 miles later.... Ugh... But yen joined us for the journey into Penzance, so her giggling kept any worries away. The hill down to Newlyn was steeeeeeep! Definitely something to test the Brakes!
Just after Penzance was where stuff went wrong... Our GPS Machines disagreed, so we decided to follow mine.. *mistake*....! We hit lots of hills... Now Cornwall is full of hills anyway, but we were making hard work of it...!... This was the low point of the day... By FAR!!... finding the shop at a village was fantastic.. Like a mirage!
A few miles before finding the shop was a worrying time as Andrew had hit a low-point with his sugar levels and wasn't sure that he could carry on. I went to a nearby house to ask for some bread or cake to raise his glucose levels, and a very kind older lady apologised for just finishing her last piece of cake but gave me a few slices of bread. She might not know it, but she made our day with that simple gesture.
After more hills, including one that was "unsuitable for motor vehicles" (and bikes, Btw!), we were heading towards our final destination for the day, in tregowny.. And with just 1.5 miles to go, we were almost home and dry... Except for the hill.... We had just about had enough of hills by then, and assuming we neared the top, Andrew stopped to take a breath, at which point, a guy in full waiter uniform including bow tie came out of one of the houses and offered us a glass of water.. We must have looked bad, but he was very kind and it was a good time to get waiter service...!
After a great meal at Jon's parents place, we are off to bed..
We're off to Taunton tomorrow.
